This rack fills the need for an elegant, small, and superbly made rear rack for those of us who don't need a touring rack. It will accept a set of small panniers for a multi-day trip, serve as a platform for a saddle bag, or carry a rack-top bag. It is just big enough for a couple of baguettes or a bottle of wine. A Sunday New York Times, a few books, or a box of doughnuts might also make an acceptable load.
It is our version of the rack made by Rene Herse, Alex Singer, and other legendary French builders. As with the classic racks, ours has proper bosses for fender mounting. An optional and detachable strut connects to the brake bridge for those unfortunate bikes with plastic fenders or no fenders.
It's made from 304 stainless steel with the expected flawless welding and polishing. We know of no production rack made today that even approaches the level of craftmanship these racks exhibit. One very well known bike builder quoted a price of $350 to make a custom similar rack.
Please notice that the mounting tangs are un-drilled. The customer will drill them to fit the bike. Thus the rack will sit as low as possible, right on the fender, improving both looks and handling. The newest version has the nice little pannier loops at the bottom. The platform is about 11cm x 26cm.
